FAQ
How is the closest color name found?
The tool compares your color against all 148 CSS named colors and picks the one with the smallest Euclidean distance in RGB space.
Why is the match not exact?
Only 148 colors have CSS names, so most of the 16.7 million possible colors fall between them. The tool returns the nearest named color, check the RGB values shown to see how close it is.
Do gray and grey return the same result?
Yes — CSS includes both spellings for the same colors. The alphabetical list order decides which spelling is shown for those shared values.
Can I enter an 8-digit hex or rgba()?
They are accepted, but the alpha channel is ignored, names are matched on the solid RGB values only.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. All calculations run entirely in your browser, your colors never leave your device.
