FAQ

What does the PAN structure mean?
First three characters are the series, the fourth is the assessee type (P = Individual, C = Company, H = HUF, F = Firm and more), the fifth is the first letter of the surname, then four digits and a final letter.
Does a valid format mean the PAN exists?
No. The format check only confirms the structure. A PAN can look right and not be issued. Confirm real PANs on the Income Tax e-filing portal.
Why is the fourth character P?
P stands for an individual assessee. Different letters mark different entity types. Companies are C, firms F, trusts T, government bodies G.
