What is the Flesch Reading Ease score?
A score from 0 to 100 where higher means easier to read. 90+ is very easy, 60–70 is plain English, 30 or less is difficult.
What is the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level?
It estimates the US school grade a reader needs to understand the text. A score of 8 means an 8th-grader can read it.
What is the Flesch-Kincaid formula?
Reading Ease = 206.835 − 1.015 × (words ÷ sentences) − 84.6 × (syllables ÷ words). Grade Level = 0.39 × (words ÷ sentences) + 11.8 × (syllables ÷ words) − 15.59. Shorter sentences and simpler words raise the ease score and lower the grade level.
What is a good Flesch Reading Ease score?
90–100 is very easy, 80–89 easy, 70–79 fairly easy, 60–69 plain English, 50–59 fairly difficult, 30–49 difficult, below 30 very difficult. For a general audience, aim for 60–70.
Does the tool work with non-English text?
The formulas are tuned for English, so scores for other languages may be misleading.
